Argostoli, Greece

Cruise ships arriving in Cephalonia can dock at a new pier in the capital, Argostoli. The town center and tender pier is only about a 10 to15 minute stroll. There is only one berth, so ships might have to use their tenders. The tenders run into the old harbour in the center of town.

Kefallinia, Kefalonia, Cephallonia -whatever spelling, the locals pronounce it as “sefalonia”.

Kefallonia was devastated in the 1953 earthquake, so much of the island’s architectural aesthetics are modern. Yet there’s plenty for the traveller to discover, including beautiful harbours, walking trails and the local cuisine.

Argostoli the capital of Kefalonia situated on a peninsular is a busy working port with ferries, private yachts and freight ships coming and going all year round. If you need to buy something this is where you will find it amongst the cosmopolitan pedestrian shopping streets, supermarkets and speciality shops. This is where all the main business is done throughout the year especially when the winter comes and the island almost goes into hibernation! Argostoli still lives on.

Cephalonia, made famous by the film with Nicholas Cage and Penelope Cruz, Captain Corellis Mandolin is a beautiful island. The town of Argostoli is the main township and lies in an inlet on the southern coast. It is perfectly protected from any rough seas. The central square and surrounding cafes are delightful.

The town is easily walkable. Turn left at the tender pier and stroll along the boulevard until you reach the “floating fishmarket” where the fish is sold from the boats. Than head one or two blocks up, where you will find nice pedestrian shopping streets and slowely make your way back from where you started.

There is also a little mini train at the dock (7 Euro), however the trip is only 20 minutes and is easily covered on foot.

A must see attraction near Argostoli is the St. George Castle. Built more than 1,600 years ago, the castle still stands tall in scenic Livatho Valley area. Assos Castle, situated about 22 miles to the north of Argostoli, is recognized as a European Heritage Site. It is the biggest castle on Kefalonia with huge walls, stone tunnels, and bastions.

Drogarati Cave is another natural wonder that is not to be missed. Discovered by chance after the 1953 earthquake, this cave is believed to be more than 100 million years old. Naturally made colorful stalagmites and stalactites are a sight to behold. You can find the Melissani Cave nearby; it is known more for the subterranean lake it beholds. Lake Melissani is filled with brackish water, which is a mixture of sweet and salty water. Tourists can take a boat ride in this lake to explore the cave.

Car rental is probably your best bet here. Or make a tour by sharing a taxi. You can get anywhere on the island within an hour’s drive.

Nearby Places:

Car ferries run hourly (more frequently in high season) from 7.30am to 10.30pm between Argostoli and Lixouri, on the island’s western peninsula. The journey takes 30 minutes, and tickets cost €2.60 per person.

Myrtos, the island’s most famous beach, is located just north of Argostoli, its capital city, located on the southern part of the island. It is arguably
one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, surrounded by striking vertical cliffs.

Shopping and Food:

As with many waterfront towns there is a hive of activity all along it with tavernas restaurants, shops and an excellent fresh fruit and vegetable market open everyday. A series of earthquakes in 1953 flattened Argostoli since when the town has been rebuilt, following the original street layout, creating a very charming capital. Whether exploring, shopping or having a cold beer by the harbors edge Argostoli is alive and vibrant.

Free Wifi at the pier where you are docked.
