Albany is a popular resort town located on one of Australia’s most beautiful stretches of coast in the south of Western Australia. It lies on the northern shore of Princess Royal harbor – one of the world’s best natural deep-water harbors. Built soon after the first convicts arrived, Albany’s oldest buildings include the Old Gaol, the Old Post Office and the Old Farmhouse. In the area around Albany you can discover the rugged coastline of the Torndirrup National Park, forests, and arable and sheep farms.

To make the most of this region, especially its national parks, a rental car is the best option.

Many operators provide tours of the area.

Take a stroll down Stirling Tce – noted for its Victorian shopfronts, the Old Post Office and the Courthouse – and up York St, where you’ll see the lovely Saint John’s Anglican Church and the town hall. A guided walking-tour brochure of colonial buildings is available from the visitors centre.

Walpole with its Tree Top Walk is a popular destination.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

Shops and services are generally open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and until lunchtime on Saturday. In cities and larger towns, many shops stay open late on Thursday or Friday evening – usually until 9pm – and all day on Saturday. Shopping malls are often open on Sundays as well.

In remote country areas, roadhouses provide all the essential services for the traveler and, on the major highways, are generally open 24 hours a day. In tourist areas, even ones well off the beaten track, tourist offices are often open every day or at least through the week plus weekend mornings; urban information centers are more likely to conform to normal shopping hours.

Tourist attractions such as museums, galleries and attended historic monuments, are often open daily, though those in rural communities may have erratic opening hours.
